UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFER

What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number?

Your Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a free educational reference number made up of ten numbers and letters.  The Australian Government issues a USI to all higher education students for the purpose of collecting information about a student’s training and study activity, within the VET and higher education systems in Australia. Having your own USI number creates a secure online database of all your nationally recognised training records which can be easily accessed online with either a computer, tablet or smartphone.

Why do I need a USI?

All students studying in Australia must have a USI. Without one, you won’t be able to receive your statement of attainment, qualification, or award. You also won’t be eligible for higher education support, like HECS-HELP.  GEM College is a recognised training provider, so all our students must have their own USI if they are enrolling in nationally recognised training for the first time, continuing with or completing nationally recognised training.

Important facts of a USI?

  • The USI is a reference number made up of ten numbers and letters. It’s free, easy to create and stays with you for life.
  • A USI is one secure place to store all your training qualifications.
  • Training organisations will assess the student’s prerequisites quickly.
  • The USI gives you access to an online record of your nationally recognised training in the form of a VET transcript. This can be used when:

    • applying for a job
    • seeking a credit transfer
    • demonstrating pre-requisites when undertaking further training.
